Teacher of Brass

Andrew Del Riccio is a Sydney-based trumpeter, teacher and conductor. He has over 30 years’ experience teaching brass and particularly trumpet from beginner to tertiary level. Students from his studio have gone on to careers in music, music education, film composition as well as simply continuing to enjoy making music.

He has prepared many students for AMEB, HSC and IB examinations and assessment with students featured in Encore, A.Mus.A distinctions and many other awards.
Andrew’s teaching ethos is founded examining technical skills and then applying them to music making. Musical literacy is a crucial element in his pedagogy. His goal is to help students become well rounded, knowledgeable musicians.

His performing has led him across the world playing with many ensembles including Bohuslava Martinu Filharmonie, EH Tarr Trumpet Ensemble, Vancouver Philharmonic, Okanagan Symphony and Cambie Street Brass. At home, he has performed extensively with many of Sydney’s leading ensembles including the Sydney Symphony, Australian Opera & Ballet, & Australian Chamber Orchestras, as well as founding the Blues Point Brass Quintet, St Peters Chamber Orchestra & The Unexpected Orchestra. He holds degrees in performance and education having studied in Australia, Canada, USA, Switzerland and the Czech Republic.

Following 20 years teaching at Trinity Grammar School, he has now taken on the director role in the instrumental program Burwood Girls’ High and is maintaining his Ashfield based teaching studio. He has adjudicated for various events including the Sydney Eisteddfod and Fine Music 104.5FM Young Virtuosi competitions. He holds degrees in music performance, music education and opera
conducting from the universities of Sydney, British Colombia, New England and Western Sydney.

Performance has always remained a central to his musical life. Andrew has continued playing, as principal trumpet with the Willoughby Symphony Orchestra, Win-Wollongong Symphony Orchestra, appeared as soloist with the Mosman Symphony Orchestra, Ryde-Hunters Hill Symphony Orchestra, East Sydney Chamber Orchestra, Bourbaki Ensemble, Orchestra 143 and continued to perform with The Australian Brass Collective, Australian Baroque Brass and The Hourglass Ensemble.

Matt Dempsey B.Mus. (Perf.), Grad.Dip.Ed. , Dip.Mus., A.Mus.A.

Matt has over 15 years experience teaching brass instruments and conducting/directing band programs in both primary & secondary schools across Sydney, and has a particular passion for teaching beginners! He has also taught trumpet at tertiary level at The University of Adelaide.

He holds the Bachelor of Music (Performance) from The Sydney Conservatorium of Music, as well as a Diploma of Education (Secondary) with some experience as a classroom music teacher.

In addition to his tertiary studies, Matt has completed conducting courses with The Australian Band & Orchestra Directors Association’s of NSW & Victoria, and The Australian Winds.

Matt is also a professional musician working frequently with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Australian Opera & Ballet Orchestra, as well as having held permanent positions as Principal Trumpet of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, and 2nd Trumpet of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. He has also worked as Guest Principal Trumpet with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, Orchestra Victoria, and with the AOBO.
