Australian Double Bass Teachers
Teacher of Double Bass
David Potts began his working life in Sydney as an industrial chemist and took up music later as a hobby. He studied Double Bass with Walter Sutcliffe, then Principal in the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and changed careers after winning a scholarship in the ABC National Training Orchestra when it started in 1967.
Soon after joining the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in 1970 David started teaching the Double Bass. He also studied further with John Gray and in 1980 joined the Sydney Conservatorium’s list of accredited private music teachers. While overseas in 1995 and 1997 he reviewed his teaching methods with three leading teachers, Tom Martin, Duncan McTier and Knut Guettler. After thirty two years in its Double Bass Section David left the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in May 2002. This has enabled him to explore, expand and enjoy a new musical life as a freelance player, private music teacher, tutor of youth orchestras and String Examiner for the Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB)
David enjoys teaching people of all ages and abilities. His special aim is to be a very good first teacher for beginners by laying down strong technical and musical foundations in a friendly and supportive manner. He is also experienced in preparing people for AMEB examinations, the HSC and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
Lessons at school are possible but most students have come to his home in Surry Hills which is close to the City and easily reached by buses or a 10 minute walk from Central Station. Please contact him for your free introduction.

John Keene L.Mus.A (Double Bass with Distinction), A.Mus.A. (Piano)
Teacher of Double Bass and Piano
John Keene has been playing the bass since 2004, and has been studying with Sydney Symphony Orchestra Principal Double Bass Alex Henery since 2010. In 2010 he received his Associate Diploma in Music, Australia on Piano, and in 2012 he received his Licentiate Diploma in Music, Australia with Distinction on Double Bass. He is also an enthusiastic organist, holding permanent positions at two churches in Sydney. He works with the Sydney Symphony on a regular basis, undertakes film and television session work with ClickTrack Music, and freelances in various other gigs around Sydney.
During the past five years, he has been a member of the Sydney Youth Orchestra, SBS Youth Orchestra, Australian Youth Orchestra Young Symphonists and National Music Camp, the Metropolitan Orchestra, and the recently formed Musician Project Orchestra. He also has a passion for conducting and in 2014 was selected – together with six other Australians, including his sister Suzannah – to participate in the Symphony Services International Scholars Conducting Program. Recently John took up the role of String Director at Cherrybrook Technical High School.
As a relative newcomer to the professional world of music, given he is quite young, John understands the pedagogical requirements of children, teaching foundational technique in a fun and enjoyable way. For the more advanced students, development of technique continues alongside a focus on crafting musicality. He is able to teach beginner to advanced level students on double bass and beginner level students on piano. He also accompanies for all levels and all instruments.
