Australian Double Bass Teachers
David Potts
Teacher of Double Bass
David Potts began his working life in Sydney as an industrial chemist and took up music later as a hobby. He studied Double Bass with Walter Sutcliffe, then Principal in the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and changed careers after winning a scholarship in the ABC National Training Orchestra when it started in 1967.
Soon after joining the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in 1970 David started teaching the Double Bass. He also studied further with John Gray and in 1980 joined the Sydney Conservatorium’s list of accredited private music teachers. While overseas in 1995 and 1997 he reviewed his teaching methods with three leading teachers, Tom Martin and Duncan McTier in London and Knut Guettler in Oslo. After thirty-two years in its Double Bass Section David left the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in May 2002. He has since enjoyed a new musical life as a freelance player and private music teacher. For years he was also a String Examiner for the Australian Music Examinations Board, leaving in 2018 with a Certificate of Appreciation for excellence in examining AMEB (NSW) strings candidates.
David enjoys teaching people of all ages and abilities. His special aim is to be a very good first teacher for beginners by laying down strong technical and musical foundations in a friendly and supportive manner. He is also experienced in preparing people for AMEB examinations, the HSC and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
Most students now come to his home in Surry Hills which is close to the City and easily reached by bus, Light Rail or a 10 minute walk from Central Station. Please contact him for your free introduction.
